New signs were posted outside an abandoned naval site in New Orleans just a day after the mayor responded to security concerns. The mayor of New Orleans responded Tuesday to citizen concerns about the condition of the abandoned Naval Support Activity Center site. On Wednesday, “no trespassing” signs were seen posted on fences around the site. WDSU cameras saw people coming and going from the site nonstop on Tuesday afternoon. The building has sat idle in the Bywater for years and is unsecured. New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell told a news conference on Tuesday that she was working with the landlord to secure the building over the next few weeks. Cantrell said his administration was working to secure federal funding that would support the redevelopment of the site. “Sites like this require a multi-layered approach with funding, and that’s the problem here,” Cantrell said. It comes a week after several people were arrested for questioning during a shooting near the site. Neighborhood residents say more than 100 homeless people live at the site. There was also a recent fire inside the building.
